What is the best choice for home repairs and more? Should I hire a handyman or a general contractor?
Many people do not quite understand what kind of company they are hiring. Construction service companies are labeled under many different catagories. But how do you know what catagory is right for you? It doesn't matter if your job is small or large. Problems can occur when you least expect them. If the person you just hired doesn't know or understand how to deal with that problem, is it then up to you to find a solution?
Handyman only service!
The companies that promote themselves as the "handyman" or the "honey do list" services are supposed to be geared toward small fix it type problems. This can be a problem because they don't actually claim to be skilled in any one field. Companies like this are known for covering up problems that they are unfamiliar with or are unable to do themselves. They may be able to finish the job and collect their pay, but are you sure they have fixed your problem correctly? It is hard to say whether the job was done correctly if only one person is claiming to have such an broad knowledge of so many different fields of home repair and construction.
General Contractor full service!
Most people think that a general contractor is hired for new construction and larger projects that require a definate need for more than one skilled trade. That is false, a general contractor's purpose is to take care of your job no matter what size it may be. Sure, there are many general contractors that wish to work on large jobs only. There are just as many general contractors that don't care about the size of the job and appriciate any type of business. When a general contractor gets a job, they know what skills they have and what skills are best to be subcontracted out. Your job may not need anything subcontracted out and your general contractor may have all the skills that your job needs. But, how are you to know exactly what your job needs until it has already started. Your job estimate is based on what your job will cost if everything goes according to the visual examination of the problem. If there are no problems, which most of the time there isn't, then your job is finished and you are happy. If something does happen, a general contractor is much better suited to manage the problem and get it taken care of in a safe and efficient manner. No bandaides that you are unaware of and no covering up the problem. You can feel safe knowing that the general contractor you hired is going to have your job done right.
Make the best choice when shopping for your construction services contractor. It only takes minutes for someone to damage what you have spent your life to get.
